Heroes Save 20 Children

MADERA, Calif. โ€” Two farmworkers, Carlos Perea Romero and Angel Zarco,

are being hailed as heroes after rescuing 20 children from a burning school bus on September 4.

Quick Action Prevents Tragedy

Perea saw smoke coming from the bus and, with Zarco, rushed to help.

โ€œWe were just making sure the kids were far away enough so that they wouldnโ€™t get hurt,โ€ Zarco said. Moments later, โ€œthe bus caught fire right awayโ€ฆ within like two minutes.โ€

Honored for Bravery

The Madera County Board of Supervisors recognized the men for โ€œselfless courage and bravery.โ€

Perea said, โ€œGod put you in that place for a reasonโ€ฆ to help out the kids.โ€

Community Gratitude

CAL FIREโ€™s Larry Pendarvis reminded, โ€œBuses can be replaced, humans canโ€™t.โ€

Sheriff Tyson Pogue added, โ€œTheir quick thinking, bravery, and compassionโ€ฆ exemplify the very best of Madera County.
