The cold waters near the Farallon Islands off San Francisco are as dangerous as they are beautiful. It was here that professional diver James Moskito was working with a small volunteer team on routine ocean conservation efforts, unaware the day would soon turn extraordinary.
While scanning the water, James noticed a massive humpback whale lingering unnaturally at the surface. One eye remained above water, fixed on him. Years of experience told him something was wrongโthe whale appeared exhausted and distressed, not curious.
Trusting his instincts, James entered the water and slowly approached the animal, fully aware of the danger posed by a creature weighing up to 40 tons. Moving calmly and deliberately, he sought to reassure the whale rather than startle it.
