The Dawson’s Creek star died aged 48 on Wednesday, having battled colorectal cancer. He had been diagnosed with the condition in August 2023, but decided to battle it privately – until he went public in November 2024.

On Wednesday James’ family released a statement to say The Dawson’s Creek star died. In a statement released on Instagram, his heartbroken wife Kimberly wrote: “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
