The cold waters near the Farallon Islands off San Francisco are as dangerous as they are beautiful. It was here that professional diver James Moskito was working with a small volunteer team on routine ocean conservation efforts, unaware the day would soon turn extraordinary.

While scanning the water, James noticed a massive humpback whale lingering unnaturally at the surface. One eye remained above water, fixed on him. Years of experience told him something was wrongโ€”the whale appeared exhausted and distressed, not curious.

Trusting his instincts, James entered the water and slowly approached the animal, fully aware of the danger posed by a creature weighing up to 40 tons. Moving calmly and deliberately, he sought to reassure the whale rather than startle it.
