After 30 Years of Marriage I Asked for a Divorce โ€ฆAnd My Husband Never Saw It Coming

My husband was shocked and deeply hurt when I asked for a divorce after thirty years of marriage. He truly believed he had been a good husband. But there was a reason behind my decisionโ€”one he had never even suspected.

Itโ€™s strange how two people can experience the same relationship so differently. Zack thought we had a happy marriage. I knew I was miserable. Our separate realities collided on our thirtieth wedding anniversary, just two weeks after our youngest child left home.

He stood there, staring at me, utterly stunned.

โ€œWhat?โ€ he asked. โ€œWhoโ€™s getting a divorce?โ€

โ€œYou,โ€ I said evenly. โ€œOr rather, I am.โ€

Zack sank into a chair, eyes wide with disbelief.

โ€œYouโ€™re divorcing me?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ I said quietly but firmly. โ€œIโ€™m divorcing you.โ€

โ€œBut why?โ€ he cried, tears unexpectedly welling up. โ€œI love you, Kelly. I always have! I never cheated on youโ€”not ever!โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s true,โ€ I admitted. โ€œYou never cheated. You never drank or gambled either.โ€

One of the most important things in a relationship is to listenโ€”to truly hear what the other person is saying.

โ€œButโ€ฆ then why?โ€ he asked, anger mixing with confusion. โ€œI did nothing, and youโ€™re divorcing me? Are you having an affair?โ€

โ€œNO!โ€ I cried. โ€œIโ€™m not! Do you want to know why Iโ€™m leaving you, Zack? Iโ€™ll tell you.โ€

I walked over and looked him straight in the eyes.
